By, Buy, Bye Ficlets Drabbles OW Vin walked into the saloon, a soft smile on his face when he spotted Buck and Della sitting at a corner table. Walking over to join the others at their regular table he said, "Buck finally got Miss Della to let him buy her a drink." Chris slid the bottle over to Vin, nodding at the glass they had waiting for him before saying, "Buck's not one to let an opportunity pass him by." "And you know Buck's motto," Josiah added. "Never say never," Nathan and Ezra said together laughing as they lifted their glasses in a toast remembering when Inez told Buck "Nunca." "I don't know guys but it looks like all Buck's efforts are finally working," JD said sipping his drink. "Oh we never doubted Buck's obvious ability with the ladies," Ezra said. "It's just nice to see him have to work at it sometimes," Vin added joining the others in laughter. "Here comes trouble," Josiah said nodding at the door. "That's Miss Della's father ain't it," Nathan added seeing the nods around the table as they all turned to watch the excitement. A minute later Mr Conrad left the saloon, a firm grip on Della's arm pulling her behind him. "Bye Buck," Della called waving. Buck was waving back when he joined the others, taking a sip from his beer before saying, "Almost had her that time, boys." His friends shook their heads and laughed. Having Buck around was always entertaining. ATF There was a weariness in his step as Vin entered him apartment. He walked to his bedroom where he toed off his boots and put his guns away. Emptying his pockets and dropping his belt on the dresser. Vin looked down at his blood stained clothes. They definitely needed to go in the wash. Stripping to bare skin in the bathroom he dropped his clothes in the hamper, he'd deal with them later. Turning on the water in the shower Vin waited for a minute to let it get warm before stepping in under the stream of water. Vin tilted his head back letting the water run down his muscular chest and legs. Closing his eyes the Texan thought back on today's bust. Ezra made the buy and the arrest went down by the book without a hitch. Everyone kept on alert until Chris made the all clear call. It should have been a simple clean up and back to the office for reports. At least it was until the scaffolding fell on top of Nathan as he finished checking his section. Josiah let out a roar and JD immediately called for everyone to report to Josiah's location. Vin reached out for the soap, starting with his left arm Vin lathered up and began to wash away Nathan's blood and say bye to the stress of the day. Careful not to cause the unconscious Nathan any more injuries Team Seven removed the broken pieces of the scaffolding from their friend. They all worry when any of the team was hurt but usually had Nathan there to work his magic and take care of their injured comrade. With Nathan being the injured one that responsibility fell to Vin with his advanced medical training from his Ranger days. Chris and Buck also had the training from being with the Navy Seals but Chris insisted the sharpshooter's was more recent so Vin was elected. They all breathed a sigh of relief when Nathan regained consciousness just as the ambulance arrived. Nathan was still dazed and confused so didn't argue with the paramedics when they loaded him on the gurney to take to the hospital. Once the Doctor's decided they wanted Nathan to spend the night as a precaution he did argue that Rain could take care of him at home as well as they could in the hospital. Laughter bubbled out of Vin when he remembered Chris reminding Nathan he would insist any other member of the team stay so like it not the healer was stuck for the night. Josiah volunteered to stay with Nathan and keep an eye on things. Buck and JD offered to go back to the office and drop everything off. Chris could tell both Ezra and Vin were tired, he knew the day of the bust took a lot out of the two men and the injury to Nathan didn't help any. "Let's call it a day boys," Chris told them as five of them left the other two in the hospital. "The paperwork can wait until tomorrow." The water was starting to cool when Vin turned it off and stepped out of the shower. He grabbed a towel to quickly dry off his body, wrapping it around his hips before reaching for a second one for his hair. Walking back to his bedroom, Vin dropped the towel around his hips on the floor by the bed. Crawling between the sheets he made a mental note to buy something special for Nate as the thanks for all the times he patched one of them up. Since Nathan wasn't hurt very often tonight reminded Vin of how much it took out of the healer to care for them. Turning off the light the Texan said bye to day knowing a good nights sleep and he would be ready to face the world again. The End >>>>>>>> |

Strange Weather Ficlets Drabbles OW Vin figured he and JD were a little over a half a days leisurely ride from home. They had been investigating some rumors about a wealthy businessman using his power to ride roughshod over a town. After dropping off the evidence they gathered with the Judge, who was waiting in the next town, the two men decided to take their time getting back home. The Texan enjoyed spending time in the outdoors with JD, the younger man soaked up any information the other peacekeepers were willing to teach him. JD was telling Vin about what it was like to grow up in Boston when Vin noticed a change in the weather. The wind had kicked up and even though there wasn't anything obvious the hairs on the back of Vin's neck tingled. Instinctively knowing he and JD needed to get out of the desert when whatever was coming arrived, the sharpshooter picked up their pace. He was glad JD trusted him enough to follow his lead without question. They weren't going to make it; Vin was desperately trying to find some shelter when he saw the cluster of rocks. Pulling Peso to a stop, the Texan jumped down and grabbed his canteen, saddlebags, and bedroll before attaching the reins to his saddle horn. Watching JD do the same with Milagro, Vin yelled over the wind, "The horses will have a better chance if we leave them free." JD started asked how they would get home without the horses, then realized at that point surviving was the worry. The horses ran off while the two men settled themselves between the rocks. Vin saw the look of fear in JD's eye when the easterner looked at the wall of sand the wind was bring toward them. Knowing his own eyes held the same look of fear Vin yelled, "Sandstorm. Lay flat, get under your bedroll, and hold on tight." They had barely gotten their heads under their bedrolls when the sandstorm covered them with its awesome fury. Chris was sitting outside the saloon when he saw Peso and Milagro come into town. His heart lurched into his throat when he realized both horses were riderless. "Buck, Ezra, outside," Chris called into the saloon before moving into the street to grab the horses. The man in black nodded at Josiah and Nathan who were rushing over from the church. "No canteen, saddlebag, or bedroll on either horse," Josiah said softly worried about their missing friends. "These reins are tied to the saddle horns, they didn't just get away from them," Nathan observed. "I'll inform Yosemite we'll be requiring two fresh horses to take with us," Ezra said turning toward the stables only to come to a stop when Peso pulled back and snorted on Chris before backing away. When Milagro started to do the same thing Buck said, "Hell Chris, it's like they want you to follow them," trying to joke some of the tension away. Chris studied the two horses. He couldn't believe he said out loud, "Is Buck right, you two want to take us to Vin and JD?" Both horses tossed their heads as if to reply yes. "Peso might be an ornery cuss at times but there is no doubt how loyal he is to Vin, and you know how Milagro is with JD," Buck said quietly so only the five men could hear. "I say we let them lead the way." Chris looked at each of his men, they all nodded in agreement. "Let's ride." A few hours later they met up with Vin and JD walking toward them on the trail. Nathan checked their two youngest over pronouncing them, dirty and tired, but uninjured. ATF Standing inside the mouth of the cave looking out, JD said, "It's August, it's not supposed to rain in August." "Yeah, well tell the rain that," Buck replied. "Staring at it ain't gonna make it stop JD," Vin added. Turning back to join the others JD said, "I know, it's just we've been working for three weeks solid. We finally get a day off to go for a ride and relax away from the city and we're stuck here in this cave." "I for one am most grateful to Vin for leading us to this cave to wait out the storm," Ezra said tipping his hat to the Texan. "This is a pretty nice cave, plenty big enough for us and the horses, and these rocks are pretty comfortable to sit on," Chris added as he stretched his long legs out in front of him. "I didn't mean it like that," JD protested. "I know you didn't JD," Vin reassured his friend. "I'd rather be out ridin' too." "Just because we're in a cave doesn't mean we can't have a good time," Josiah said. "Josiah's right," Nathan said. "We can talk, I'm sure Ezra has a deck of cards with him." "That I do Nathan," Ezra said with a smile as he held the deck up for the others to see. "Hey, we have the food too," JD said his spirits lifting. "Yeah, let's eat first and then play cards," Vin suggested. For the next several hours the seven friends ate, played poker, and shared stories. JD glanced over at the opening to the cave and asked, "When did the rain stop?" "Don't know kid, I was having too much fun to pay attention to the rain," Buck answered. "Are we planning on finishing this game before we leave?" Ezra asked reluctant to leave their sanctuary. "If we leave we'll just have to go back to the ranch," Vin said softly hoping he wasn't the only one who wanted to stay. "Vin's right, everything will be all wet. Be better to stay here until we want to go back to civilization," Chris suggested. "Wet trail could cause a horse to slip, safer to stay here for awhile and let them dry out," Nathan said. "I'm pretty comfortable right here, be a shame to have to move," Josiah said. "I'm for staying," JD added his vote. "Guess we're staying then," Chris told them with a smile. "I'll take two more cards Ezra." "Know what guys, a rainy day in August is a pretty good way to spend your day off," JD said making the others laugh as they nodded in agreement. >>>>>> |
| Alternate Transportation Ficlet Drabbless Have the guys using transportation they wouldn't normally use in the AU written in. ATF "He turned right on that dirt road," Vin called out loudly to be heard over the siren that was giving warning to the other drivers as the black Ram weaved in and out of traffic during their pursuit. Chris nodded then told Vin, "Let Josiah know." Grabbing the radio, Vin called back to Josiah, Nathan, Buck, and JD who were all in the profiler's Suburban trailing behind them. Chris pulled the Ram to a stop behind the car they had been chasing. Vin quickly let the others know they were on foot, then ran off after Larabee. The two crested the hill just in time to see the men they were pursuing take off in one of the ultralight airplanes. Members of the aviation club that were there for a group event, hollered at the departing plane to come back. Vin ran over to a two-seater ultralight trainer and started it up, while Chris flashed his badge at the owner. Strapping himself in, Chris looked over at Vin and said, "Are you sure about this?" "Yep, been taking lessons and that jerk has Ezra with him," Vin answered knowing with or without Chris he was going after his friend. "Let's go," Chris agreed. The aviation group consisted of several ultralight instructors who had brought their two-seater trainers with them planning on giving some lessons during their outing. JD and Buck rushed over to one of the trainers while Josiah and Nathan ran to another. At Buck's concerned look, JD said, "Vin and I have been taking lessons together." Nathan was an experienced flyer but this was his first time in a plane that only had a seat, wings, and an engine. Josiah reach out and patted his friend's arms saying softly, "I'm the one giving Vin and JD lessons, relax." The three ultralights containing the six members of ATF Team Seven skillfully maneuvered around to herd the fourth ultralight back to the cliff they had left from. That plane which contained their seventh and the man who kidnapped him landed first, closely followed by Vin and Chris on one side and Buck and JD on the other. Josiah and Nathan stayed in the air to prevent the man from trying to take off again. Chris and Buck had their guns drawn and were more than ready to put a bullet in the jerk who had dared to kidnap their friend. One look at Chris and Howie Anderson knew he made a huge mistake in forcing the man he knew as Ezra Simpson to go with him. Surrender was his only option for coming out of this mess alive. Once Howie had been turned over to a local deputy and all the ultralights returned to their rightful owners the members of Team Seven returned to their vehicles. Ezra stopped by Chris's Ram to say, "I can't believe you followed Mr Anderson in ultralights." "Hell Ez, we only followed because he had you. You're part of this motley crew and nobody takes what's ours," Vin said, his smile warmed Ezra's heart as the Texan slapped him on the back. Chris reached out to put a hand on Ezra's shoulder. "Our reports can wait, let's go to the saloon for a drink." Ezra couldn't help the feelings of belonging that coursed through him as each and every member of the team patted him on the shoulder. Vin saw the emotions threatening to overcome their undercover agent. Deciding to lighten the mood he said, "You hear that boys, Chris is buying." OW JD looked around at the snow that had fallen the night before. When he first moved to town he thought the winters would be like they were back home in Boston so he built a surprise for each of his new friends. Now that they finally had snow he could share them for the first time Running to the stable he pulled back the dust covered tarp revealing his gifts, patiently waiting to be used. Yosemite smiled at the excitement that seemed to radiate from the youngest peacekeeper as he watched him carefully load the seven surprises into a wagon then covered them again with the tarp. Yosemite walked up to JD to say, "You go gather the others, I'll hitch up the wagon for you." "Thanks, Yosemite ," JD replied beaming with happiness. An hour later JD was driving the wagon leading the other six out to share his surprise with them. JD pulled the wagon to a stop at the base of a hill he thought would be perfect. Jumping down he pulled back the tarp and handed each of his friends the gift he had made for them. "C'mon," JD hollered starting up the hill with the seventh of his gifts. "We need to go to the top." "He's so excited, what would it hurt to go up there with him," Buck told the others quietly before he turned to follow JD up the hill. Vin was the last to arrive at the top of the hill. The Texan could see JD had put a lot of work into the gifts each of them carried and, even though he didn't know what they were for, he intended to see that whatever plans the easterner had them would be followed. JD's face was glowing with excitement when he turned to the others to say, "Goin' sledding was my favorite part of winter back in Boston ." "Sledding?" Vin asked not sure he liked what he thought was coming next as he watched JD put his gift down on the top of the hill. "Yeah, these are sleds. You sit on them and use the rope to steer as you slide it down the hill," JD explained. "Am I to understand you made us walk up this hill just so we could sit on some wood and metal to ride it back to the bottom," Ezra said wondering how he could get out of it without hurting JD's feelings. "Yep, and when we get to the bottom we come back up so we can do it all over again," JD said not noticing that the others didn't looked thrilled about the idea. "Why would we want to that?" Buck asked. "I've heard sledding is a favorite winter activity," Josiah said. "You guys have taught me so much, I wanted to be able to share something with you," JD said trying unsuccessfully to hide the hurt he was feeling that his idea was a dismal failure. Vin carried his sled over and put it down next to JD's. Tapping the younger man on the arm to get his attention, he winked and said, "C'mon kid, let's show 'em how it's done." The Texan knew he said the right thing when he saw JD's face light up again just before the easterner sat on his sled and gave Vin some quick instructions. With a yell of joy the two men pushed off and raced down the hill, their laughter easily carrying back to the others. Ezra was the next to put down his sled and sit down for his ride. "You aren't really going to do that, are you?" Nathan asked shocked. "Surely you don't except me to walk back down when I could ride," Ezra said, his gold tooth flashing at them with the smile he gave before pushing off to follow the two youngest down the hill. Chris walked over and got ready for his turn. Looking back at the others he asking, "You don't think I'm going to listen to them go on about how we were afraid to try do you? If Vin and Ezra can do it, so can I." "You got a point there Big Dog, hold up I'll ride with you," Buck said joining Chris. "They're going to break their fool necks," Nathan said. "Maybe, but they do sound like they're having fun," Josiah replied as he moved over to put his own sled down. Nathan was torn as he watched Josiah push off and give out a yell of pure glee as he followed the others. He could hear JD and Vin coming back for a second ride, both laughing like kids. "Aw hell, I'm not going to be the only one who doesn't at least try it," Nathan said under his breath before he joined in the fun. Later that night the seven men sat in the saloon enjoying the dinner Inez prepared for them. They were still comparing notes and laughing about their repeated trips up and down the hill. JD was beaming when Chris reached out and squeezed his shoulder saying, "Thanks JD, for sharing sledding with us." >>>>>>> |
| Speed Ficlet Drabbles ATF In various parts of Denver six cell phones received the COME NOW text message. Not one of the men hesitated to drop what they were doing to head to their vehicles for the drive to the ranch of their seventh. They all knew the message would only be sent for something of the highest importance. Josiah and Nathan were together when they received the message. They felt confident they would be the first to arrive; after all, they were on the outskirts of Denver heading in the direction of Chris's ranch when it came. Josiah was skillfully speeding down the freeway while Nathan was checking his medical supplies. "Damn," Josiah cursed causing Nathan to look up in time to see Buck and JD speed past them. "Hold tight," the big man warned as he increased his speed enough to leap frog past the two roommates. The two vehicles kept neck and neck for a while until they were both passed by Vin in his jeep. "Damn," JD said, "I didn't know Vin's jeep could go that fast." Vin managed to hold the lead until they were almost to the off ramp that lead to Chris's ranch. Ezra's Jag flew past the other three vehicles to be the first off the freeway followed closely by the others. For the safety of others on the road they did reduce their speed once they left the freeway and passing each other stopped. Their four-vehicle caravan, Ezra in the lead, followed by Vin, then Josiah and Nathan, with Buck and JD bringing up the rear, were soon parking in Chris's yard. Without the hindrance of doors, Vin was the first out and headed to the barn with JD hot on his heels. Out of respect for what was happening inside they all entered quietly, moving deeper in to join Chris at the stall he was in. "Should be any minute now," Chris told them, never taking his attention from the mare about to foal. Vin joined Chris in the stall, taking a position at the mares head. Chris nodded his approval, knowing that Sadie Bell was very fond of Vin and he would be able to help her through the birth of her first foal. Less than an hour later JD sat cleaning up the wobbly-legged foal while Vin and Chris tended to his Mama. While the foal nursed the sweet taste of Mother's milk, Buck handed out beers to men. Vin held his up in a toast, "To Sadie Bell." OW Vin's heart was racing, keeping up with rapid beat of hooves as he rode to town for help. Feeling Milagro tire, the Texan never slowed down as he leapt from Milagro's back onto Peso's. Vin knew the only way he could keep up this speed was switch off between the two horses he had with him. He thought back to how horrified he was to find JD trapped under that tree. The young man was in pain and very pale. No matter how hard he tried Vin couldn't budge the tree so he had to leave JD alone to ride to town for the others. They both knew time was a critical factor in whether or not the Easterner survived. Josiah and Nathan were returning from a visit to Kojay's village when they saw Vin racing toward them. His grace as he jumped from one horse to another impressed them but it also told them something serious was going on. Josiah fired his gun to attract the Texan's attention. Once Vin told them were to find JD he continued on his way to town, his instincts told him they would need all of them to save their youngest. Chris saw Vin racing into town and had Buck and Ezra with him in the stable getting their horses ready to ride by the time Tanner got there. Vin was relieved to see them. He quickly filled them in and said, "We'll need a wagon." Chris nodded, "You bring it out and met us there." "No, I promised the kid I'd be right back," Vin insisted. "You ride with the others Vin, I'll bring the wagon," Yosemite told them as he handed Vin the reins to his fastest horse. "Don't worry; we'll take care of Peso and Milagro too." Vin nodded, not trusting his voice not to crack with the emotions he was feeling. "Mr Tanner, where is your mare's leg?" Ezra asked. "Left it with JD, he couldn't get to his guns and I couldn't leave him unable to protect himself," Vin explained softly. Buck walked up to Vin, pulling him into a quick hug before saying, "You did good pard, now let's go get the kid." Buck was at JD's side as soon as they arrived. "I can't let you out of my sight for a minute," he teased, grateful to see JD's weak smile. Josiah and Nathan had formed a plan while they were waiting, one of them would kneel at JD's head to pull the young man out when the others lifted the tree up enough to free him. Ezra volunteered to be the one to pull JD out. Kneeling in the dirt to get into position, Ezra smiled when JD said, "Sorry about making you get dirty Ezra." "I'll forgive you this time Mr. Dunne but don't make a habit of it," Ezra replied with a wink. Nathan had warned everyone it would hurt, but even knowing JD couldn't hold back the scream of agony when Ezra pulled him free. The healer had done what he could by the time Yosemite arrived with the wagon. He was still worried about the injuries but Nathan was pleased to announce nothing was broken. Two days later JD slowly limped into the saloon and carefully lowered himself into a seat at the table the others were. All of them breathed a sigh of relieve, JD was battered and bruised, he would be moving slowly for awhile but thanks to his friends he was alive and getting better each day. >>>>> |
