Christmas Ribbons

Vin Tanner nervously straightened the collar of his crisp white shirt, and ran his comb though his chestnut tresses one last time. Why he was
acting so foolish was beyond him. He had attended the town’s social gatherings before and had never felt this nervous. If he didn’t get a hold of
his nerves soon, he was going to make a laughingstock of himself and Inez Recillos wouldn’t ever forgive him.

“Relax, Vin…this is only for one night.” He muttered aloud as he finished his grooming and then left the security of his covered wagon.

He headed down the street toward the Standish Tavern, where he had planned to meet Inez in the alley behind it. Inez had helped the other
ladies in town decorate the saloon for that evening’s festivities. Since ladies and children would be present in the saloon, Ezra had decreed that
no liquor harder than beer would be served to the gentlemen attending, and that would be only sparingly. After the party had ended then the
saloon would return to its regular business.

Inez was waiting in the back doorway for him when he arrived in the alleyway. She was wearing a white gown that was embroidered festively with
red flowers and green leaves along the neck, and the hem of her skirt. A braid of red and green was tied around her slender waist, and her
luscious black hair was tied back from her face with a matching strip of colorful cloth. A lace shawl was draped around her shoulders.

“Feliz Navidad Vin.” Inez said as she came to a stop before her.

“Feliz Navidad,” Vin replied, an appreciative smile lighting his face as he took in her appearance. “You sure look pretty tonight.”

Inez blushed at the compliment. “Gracias, senor.”

“I suppose we should make our appearance at the party.” Vin offered his arm to her.

“Si, we should.”

Together they moved back down the alleyway from which Vin had appeared a short time earlier. When they reached the batwing doors Vin
paused outside them.

“I should warn you that I’m not too good at dancing.” He confessed to Inez.

“You need not do anything that you are not comfortable with Vin.” Inez assured him. “It is enough that you asked me to attend the party with you.”

Vin gave her a relieved smile. “Thanks, Inez…and I’m the one who is honored that you agreed to attend it with me.”

“We are both honored. “ Inez replied.

Vin smiled at her and then stepped through the batwing doors, holding them open for Inez to walk through, as both were greeted by the rest of
the party attendees.

Feliz Navidad
Buck Wilmington, resident ladies man and peacekeeper of the fair citizens of Four Corners, was actually nervous. He stood on the porch of
Esther Wilson’s boarding house waiting for someone to answer his ringing of the bells, and hoped it would be Chastity that answered it. The long
strand of bells was a topic of conversation among the citizens of Four Corners, as well as the boarding house residents. Esther Wilson, a widow,
had arrived in town several weeks earlier, and had decided to start her life over by running a boarding house. She had quickly staked out her
claim on a nice piece of land and Josiah Sanchez’ heart, Buck’s fellow peacekeeper.

Chastity Cummings had arrived in town determined to prove that she was capable of surviving without the help of any man. Her wavy fiery red
hair had been hanging madly around her shoulders, her forest green traveling suit layered with dust, and her emerald green eyes spitting with
fire as she stepped down from the stagecoach that had brought her into town.

He had been sitting outside of the jail, shooting the breeze with Vin Tanner and Ezra Standish, when the stagecoach had arrived in town. The
moment he had spotted the top of Chastity’s red head, all of his attention had been riveted on the stagecoach. The buxom that was attached to
the red hair had taken his breath away and propelled him out of his chair, and down the wooden walkway toward the lovely woman. He had heard
Vin and Ezra taking bets on how the young woman would receive him, followed by their shared laughter, but paid them no mind. He introduced
himself to Chastity and offered to escort her to the hotel. Chastity had told him to go to hell and proceeded onto the hotel.

She had certainly made him work to get close to her over the past couple of weeks. One night, after he had managed to get her to accept his
dinner invitation, she had told him that she been a ‘whore’ in a high priced bordello in St. Louis, and had made enough money to quit the
business and start her life over. She had told him fiercely that she wouldn’t go back to living that sort of life again, no matter how much he sweet-
talked her.

Buck had made sure she understood that no man, including him, was going to make her do anything that she didn’t want to do. It had begun a
tenuous friendship between them that had deepened the more time they spent with one another. It hadn’t taken him long before he realized that
he was falling in love with her, and wondered if she felt anything for him other than friendship. He planned to tell her that night how he felt
before they left for the town’s Christmas party, and that was what was making him so nervous.

The door finally opened to reveal Chastity wearing a brilliant green dress trimmed with red lace and ribbons that accentuated her curvaceous
body. Her glorious red hair was piled atop her head in an intricate style that left a few tresses falling to frame her lovely face.

“Chastity, you are by far the loveliest woman in all of Four Corners.” Buck told her as he held out a hand to her.

“Thank you, Buck. You look right handsome yourself in your fancy duds.” Chastity said, placing her hand in Buck’s and let him pull her into his
embrace. She lifted her head up for the kiss that Buck so desperately wanted to give her. They were both breathless when the kiss ended a few
moments later.

“I love you Chastity.” Buck said, holding her tighter to him, hoping that by telling her how his feelings had changed hadn’t ruined things between
them.

“Oh, Buck.” Chastity breathed out past the lump of emotion that had lodged in her throat. When she had left Saint Louis, she had made a solemn
vow to never allow herself be taken in by another man, like she had been by Jenner Krebbs.

Of course she had never known a man like Buck Wilmington before. She knew all about his past, and found that he had a unique understanding
into how her felt. It was more than that, Buck made her feel whole. His very presence in her life had become something that she depended on,
and not in the way that she had ever depended on a man before. Buck treated her as an equal, a woman to not only be admired for her outer
beauty, but to be respected for whom she was on the inside.

“Chastity…if I’ve done anything…” Buck started to apologize, but Chastity quickly quieted his words with another kiss.

“I never dreamed that men like you existed Buck. All the men that I’ve encountered before were all for themselves, all eager to get what they
wanted, and then left me hurting. But not you, Buck, you’ve shown me what love is really like.” Chastity told him when she broke the kiss.

“Are you saying?” Buck held his breath, desperately needing to hear her say the words.

“I love you too, Buck.”
Nathan Jackson’s dark eyes flashed with merriment as he twirled Rain around in time to the lively music. The town’s annual Christmas party was
in full swing, and he was glad that he had decided to attend it. He had planned on leaving earlier that day to ride out to the Seminole village to
share the holiday with Rain. He knew that since her father’s death that holidays didn’t hold as much meaning to them as they once did. Besides
that, the Seminoles with whom she lived and considered as family didn’t celebrate the same traditions that they did.

He had been detained, however, when one of the small boys of a local couple had fallen from a hayloft and injured himself. The injury hadn’t
been serious due to his having landed on a bale of hay, fortunately, but very painful and it had taken him some time to repair it. It had been too
late by the time he was finished to even think about leaving, so he had decided to postpone his travel until after he and the rest of the seven
exchanged their gifts the following afternoon.

Rain arriving in town a short time after the party had started had surprised him. She was wearing a beautiful buckskin skirt dyed red, with a crisp
white blouse edged with red embroidery. Her curly dark hair was free and falling just past her shoulders and her dark eyes had been sparkling
with joy at seeing him again. She had been a vision to behold.

Once his surprise had faded away he had asked her what she was doing there. She had laughed at him and said that it was a silly question to ask,
since it was obvious that she had come to be with him. He acknowledged that it had been a silly question, and then they had gone into the
saloon.

Now as the song they were dancing to ended, Nathan realized how hot the saloon had become.

“Let’s go outside and get some fresh air?” he suggested to Rain.

“Okay.” She agreed and the two of them slipped outside onto the wooden sidewalk.

Nathan leaned against one of the posts and gazed intently at Rain. She was beautiful. He couldn’t help the sense of pride that swelled up within
him every time he looked at her and realized that she was his. He knew that despite the fact that neither one of them had spoken of any
commitments to each other, yet it was evident every time that they were together. Maybe it was time for him to reveal to her just what he felt for
her.

Rain held her ground as Nathan closed the short space between them. She had decided that very day to tell Nathan that she loved him. She
knew that Nathan felt the same attraction to her as she did for him. It was evident in his eyes as he looked at her, in his words as he spoke, and
in his touch. Yet, he had never so much as said the three words she longed to hear from him. Maybe he would if she declared her feelings first.
Nathan lifted his hands to cup each side of her beautiful face. He leaned in and kissed her soft, warm lips with his own. Rain closed her eyes and
gave into the sweet bliss of feeling Nathan’s lips upon hers, his hands on her face, and his body pressed close.

When the kiss ended a few moments later they were both a bit breathless.

“I love you Rain.” Nathan said softly. “ The words have been a long time coming I know…but the feelings have been there for quite some time. It’
s just hard for me to put what I’m feeling into words.”

Rain smiled at him, her eyes growing moist. “I love you, too, Nathan. You’ve shown me in more than one way that you cared, but hearing you tell
me you love me is the best way of all.”

“I’m going to be telling them to you a lot more often.” Nathan promised her.

“Showing me how you feel is important too.” Rain said with a light in her eyes.

She reached out and caressed his strong jaw with one hand. A slow smile creased Nathan’s lips as Rain leaned forward and kissed him. Nathan’s
hands moved from her face to encircled her waist as the kiss deepened and they lost themselves in holiday bliss.
